Eritrean Nakfa
About Eritrean Nakfa
The currency of Eritrea since independence from Ethiopia in 1993. The nakfa is named after the town of Nakfa, a stronghold of the Eritrean Peoples Liberation Front during the independence war. Eritrean banknotes feature different groups of Eritrean people representing the nine ethnic groups. The nakfa is pegged to the US dollar. Eritrea is one of the most closed economies in the world, with strict government controls on foreign exchange.
