About Egyptian Pound
Introduced by Muhammad Ali Pasha, the founder of modern Egypt. The Egyptian pound was based on the British pound sterling system. The pound is one of the oldest currencies in Africa and the Middle East. Egyptian banknotes feature historical mosques and pharaonic statues. The Central Bank of Egypt was established in 1961. The pound has devalued significantly since 2016 economic reforms.
