About US Early Copper Detail
The early US copper coinage includes the Chain cent, Wreath cent, Liberty Cap cent, and half cent of 1793. The Chain cent was the first coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Only 36,103 Chain cents were minted. The chain of 13 links was criticized as evoking slavery. It was quickly replaced by the Wreath cent. Early copper coins are collected by variety, with hundreds of die combinations catalogued by Sylvester Crosby in 1869.
