About Spanish Doubloon
The famous Spanish gold coin, worth 2 escudos or 4 dollars. Minted from gold looted from the Americas. Pirates and privateers sought doubloons above all other treasure. The term comes from doble meaning double, as it was worth double the ducat. Spanish galleons carried doubloons from the New World to Europe. Shipwrecks off Florida and the Caribbean still yield doubloons worth millions today.
