The currency of Cyprus until euro adoption in 2008. Introduced when Cyprus became a British protectorate. The Cypriot pound was equal to the British pound sterling until 1972. Featured ancient Greek and Byzantine motifs. Cyprus adopted the euro in 2008 at 0.5853 pounds per euro. The Central Bank of Cyprus was established in 1963. The island remains divided between the Republic of Cyprus, which uses the euro, and Northern Cyprus, which uses the Turkish lira.
