Cuban Peso
About Cuban Peso
Cuba has operated a dual currency system with the Cuban peso CUP and the convertible peso CUC pegged to the dollar. The CUC was introduced in 1994 to replace the dollar after the Special Period economic crisis. Cuba is gradually unifying the two currencies as of the 2020s. Cuban banknotes feature national heroes including Jose Marti and Che Guevara. The cuban peso is not freely convertible. Cuba has two economies operating at different price levels due to the dual system.
