About Cuban Convertible Peso
The CUC was pegged to the US dollar and used in the tourism sector and stores. Created during the Special Period after Soviet aid ended. The CUC was worth 25 times the regular Cuban peso. The dual currency system created social inequality between those with access to CUCs and those without. Cuba began phasing out the CUC in 2021, unifying the currency system. The CUC is being withdrawn from circulation.
