About British Crown
Worth five shillings or a quarter of a pound. The crown was a large silver coin, originally circulating currency but later primarily commemorative. The 1937 crown featured the abbreviated inscription of Edward VIII, who abdicated before most coins were issued. Modern crowns are still minted for commemoratives but have a face value of five pounds. Queen Victoria Gothic crown of 1847 is a masterpiece.
