Costa Rican Colon
About Costa Rican Colon
Replaced the Costa Rican peso in 1896. Named after Christopher Columbus, known as Cristobal Colon in Spanish. The colon was pegged to the US dollar until 2015 when it moved to a managed float within a band. Costa Rican banknotes feature national wildlife including sloths, monkeys, and butterflies. The Banco Central de Costa Rica was established in 1950. Costa Rica abolished its army in 1948, making it unique among Latin American countries.
