Confederate Half Dollar
About Confederate Half Dollar
In April 1861, the New Orleans Mint struck four prototype half dollars for the Confederacy. The obverse used the standard Liberty Seated design. The reverse featured a Confederate flag and the inscription CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA. Only four originals exist, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each. Restrikes were made in 1879 using the reverse die. The Confederate half dollar is one of the rarest and most historically significant American coins.
