Confederate Dollar
About Confederate Dollar
Issued by the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Backed by cotton rather than gold or silver. Initially popular, but lost value as the war turned against the Confederacy. By 1865, the currency was virtually worthless, with inflation exceeding 9,000 percent. Many confederate notes were printed with scenes of enslaved people and mythological figures. After the war, the notes became collectible curiosities, now known as rebel money or greybacks.
