About Colonial Currency
Paper money issued by the individual American colonies. Massachusetts was first in 1690 to pay soldiers returning from a failed expedition to Canada. Each colony issued its own notes. Pennsylvania pounds, Virginia tobacco notes, and Massachusetts bills all circulated. Inflation was common. The Continental Congress issued continental currency in 1775 which became worthless. The Constitution later banned state paper money.
