About US Classic Commemorative Coins
A series of commemorative coins issued from 1892 to 1954. The first was the Columbian Exposition half dollar of 1892 and 1893. Over 50 different designs were issued. Many commemorated local events and were sold at a premium to raise funds. The Oregon Trail half dollar was issued over many years with different dates and mint marks. The series ended amid controversy over speculative abuses. Modern commemoratives resumed in 1982.
