About US Buffalo Nickel Detail
The buffalo was modeled on Black Diamond, a bison at the Central Park Zoo. The Native American portrait combined features of three chiefs: Iron Tail, Two Moons, and John Big Tree. The date wore off quickly in circulation because it was placed on a high point. The 1937-D three legged buffalo is a famous error caused by excessive die polishing. The 1916 doubled die is another notable variety.
