Buffalo Nickel
About Buffalo Nickel
Also called the Indian Head nickel. Featured a Native American chief on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse. Designed by James Earle Fraser, who used three real Native Americans as models. The buffalo was Black Diamond from the Central Park Zoo. The design wore quickly in circulation, making many dates unreadable. The 1937-D three legged buffalo is a famous variety. The buffalo design was revived for the 2006 gold bullion coin.
