About British India Rupee
The silver rupee of British India after the Crown took control from the East India Company. Featured the reigning British monarch on the obverse. The 1840 and 1862 rupees are the most common dates. British India rupees circulated throughout the subcontinent and the Persian Gulf. The rupee was demonetized in some Gulf states only in the 1960s. The Victoria Empress rupee is collected in all grades. British India coinage ended with independence in 1947.
