About Bracteate
A thin single sided silver coin produced in medieval Germany and Scandinavia. The design was stamped into a thin silver flan, creating a raised image on one side and an incuse impression on the other. Bracteates were produced in enormous quantities in central Germany. Each bishopric, abbey, and city could mint its own bracteates. The coins were periodically called in and reissued with new designs, a process called Renovatio Monetae.
