About Booker T. Washington Half
A commemorative half dollar honoring Booker T. Washington, the African American educator and founder of the Tuskegee Institute. Designed by Isaac Scott Hathaway, the first African American to design a US coin. Minted from 1946 to 1951 with multiple dates and mint marks. Over 1.8 million were minted, making it one of the most common classic commemoratives. The coin was sold to raise funds for the Booker T. Washington Birthplace Memorial.
