About US Bicentennial Quarter
Featured a colonial drummer boy on the reverse instead of the eagle. Dated 1776-1976. Over 1.6 billion were minted for circulation in copper-nickel clad and 40 percent silver versions. The design by Jack L. Ahr was selected through a public competition. The Bicentennial quarter, half dollar, and dollar all had special reverses for the anniversary. Despite massive mintages, the public hoarded them, creating a temporary coin shortage.
