About Bangladeshi Taka
Introduced after the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. Replaced the Pakistani rupee at par. The taka is named from the Sanskrit tanka, an ancient coin name. The first Bangladeshi banknotes featured a map of the country. Bangladeshi coins feature national symbols including the water lily and the jackfruit. The Bangladesh Bank was established in 1972. The taka has gradually depreciated against major currencies.
