About Argentine Austral
A short lived currency that replaced the Argentine peso at 1,000 to 1 during the fight against hyperinflation. The austral lasted only 7 years before being replaced by the current peso in 1992. The austral was named after the austral star. Despite initial hopes, the austral itself succumbed to hyperinflation. The 500,000 austral note was the highest denomination. The austral is a symbol of Argentinas repeated unsuccessful attempts to control inflation.
