About Argentine Peso
The Argentine peso has undergone multiple redenominations due to chronic inflation. The peso of 1881 was pegged to the gold standard and made Argentina one of the wealthiest countries per capita. The 2001 economic crisis destroyed the peso-dollar peg. The peso was redenominated in 1983, 1985 as the austral, and again in 1992. Argentine banknotes feature historical figures including Eva Peron and Julio Argentino Roca. Chronic inflation remains a challenge.
