About US Amazonian Coinage
A pattern coin design featuring Liberty seated with a sword and shield, nicknamed Amazonian. Designed by William Barber. The Amazonian patterns included half dollars, quarters, and dimes. The design was bold and artistic but not adopted for circulation. These patterns are extremely rare and valuable. The Amazonian name comes from the warlike appearance of Liberty. Only a handful of each denomination exist.
