Almoravid Dinar
About Almoravid Dinar
Gold dinars of the Almoravid dynasty that ruled Morocco and Muslim Spain. The Almoravids controlled the trans-Saharan gold trade, giving them access to enormous wealth. Their gold dinars were among the purest Islamic coins of the medieval period. Featured only inscriptions as per Maliki Islamic jurisprudence. Almoravid dinars were called maravedi in Christian Spain, a word that later became a unit of account. These coins financed the Almoravid conquest of West African gold kingdoms.
