About Albanian Lek
The lek was introduced in 1926 after Albania gained independence from the Ottoman Empire. Named after Alexander the Great, called Leka in Albanian. The lek was redenominated in 1965 and 1991. Albanian banknotes feature national hero Skanderbeg on most denominations. The Bank of Albania was established in 1925. Albania is a candidate for EU membership but has no current timeline for euro adoption.
