The Afghani replaced the Afghan rupee in 1925 during the reign of King Amanullah. The afghani has survived invasions, civil wars, and the Taliban regime. Afghan banknotes feature historical monuments including the minaret of Jam and the Blue Mosque of Mazar-i-Sharif. The afghani was redenominated in 2002, removing three zeros. Da Afghanistan Bank was established in 1939. Despite decades of conflict, the afghani has maintained surprising stability.
