Novgorod Ruble
About Novgorod Ruble
Long thin silver ingots used in medieval Novgorod and other Russian cities. Also called wire money or grivnas. The Novgorod ruble was approximately 200 grams of silver. These ingots were the ancestors of the modern ruble. The word ruble may come from rubit meaning to chop, as ingots were chopped to make smaller payments. Ivan III began minting actual ruble coins in the late 15th century.
