Created by Vitalik Buterin and launched in 2015. Introduced smart contracts, programmable agreements that execute automatically. Ether is the native cryptocurrency used to pay for computation on the Ethereum network. The DAO hack of 2016 caused a controversial hard fork, splitting Ethereum and Ethereum Classic. Ethereum processed the transition from proof of work to proof of stake in September 2022, reducing its energy consumption by 99.95 percent.
