The first decentralized cryptocurrency, created by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. Launched in January 2009 with the mining of the genesis block. Limited to 21 million coins, over 19 million have been mined. Bitcoin introduced the blockchain, a public ledger maintained by a network of computers without central authority. The first commercial Bitcoin transaction was 10,000 BTC for two pizzas in May 2010, now worth hundreds of millions. Reached 1 trillion dollar market cap in 2021.
