The History of the United States Mint
Founded in 1792 in Philadelphia, then the capital. The first coins were struck from silver deposited by citizens. David Rittenhouse was the first Director.
Early mint workers used screw presses powered by human or horse strength. Branch mints opened in New Orleans, Charlotte, Dahlonega, San Francisco, Carson City, Denver, and West Point. The mint produces over 10 billion coins annually.
